Then they'll either do what you told, or they'll do something else.

Instead of trying to leave a lasting memorial, people are now seeking ways to show respect for both the person and the environment.
In some ways, these new approaches leave a more lasting memorial. Imagine, for example, the difference between planting a forest that will grow versus building a structure that will erode.
